NINE senior Highlanders players' contracts are running out at the end of this year among them the club's first and second choice goalkeepers.
While the Highlanders' chief executive officer Ndumiso Gumede did not reveal the players whose contracts are running out, Chronicle Sport understands that first choice goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda, his deputy Njabulo Nyoni, defenders Felix Chindungwe, Erick Mudzingwa, Mthulisi Maphosa and Webster Chingodza are some of the players whose marriage with the Bulawayo giant ends on December 31.
There is also the trio of on loan Bantu Rovers players Obadiah Tarumbwa, Nqobizitha Masuku and Teenage Hadebe.
"Nine players are having their contracts ending on December 31 but I can't give you their names. We've asked our interim technical team to begin their assessment of players so that they can come up with a list of players they want to retain. We however understand that some of them are already in talks with our neighbours, Bulawayo City," said Gumede during the club's weekly Press conference yesterday.
Interim technical director Cosmos Tsano Zulu said they have not started the process of assessing the players that might be needed next season from the nine whose contracts are running out
"Ariel is in his best form ever, he's the very reason why we're now on position six. He is the same boy who had conceded 23 goals but now we've gone for seven matches without a defeat while conceding seven goals nine matches which is really impressive," said Zulu.
Indications are that the club will promote a number of its youngsters from the Under-19 developmental side coached by Melusi "Mabaleka" Sibanda who were instrumental in the team's promotion to the Zifa Division One League.
