Johannesburg - It is yet to be established whether the man arrested in connection with the brutal attack on two couples at Rhodes Park in Kensington was in the country legally.
News24 reported that the Zimbabwean national appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
His case was postponed to November 24.
His lawyer, Dumisani Mabunda, said they would have all his documents ready by then and the suspect intended to apply for bail.
With his dreadlocks plaited into cornrows and a bruise above the left eye, the 24-year-old stood upright in the dock.
He looked tidy in a black and white T-shirt and maroon pants.
The suspect is alleged to have been part of a gang of around a dozen men who attacked two couples who had gone to the park after a church service in central Johannesburg.
The gang is alleged to have accosted the couples, beat the two men before stripping them and tying their hands and feet with their clothes before throwing them in the lake where they drowned.
One of the women was allegedly raped while the other escaped without any physical harm.
While police had said they were confident that his arrest would lead to the capture of other suspects, he is still the sole accused in the matter.
