Mahalapye police are investigating a case in which a 17-year-old student was gang-raped while walking home from the bars on Saturday night.
Mahalapye police station commander, Superintendent Isaac Mamadi said the victim, who is a Form Two student, was raped by a group of four men suspected to be aged between 22 and 23 at around 11pm.

"According to the victim, she was walking with her friends from the bars on Saturday and while on the way a group of men came from the opposite direction.

She told us that her friends managed to escape, but she was grabbed and dragged to a nearby abandoned house and gang-raped," he said.

Mamadi said the victim was unable to identify the suspects, but police were on the trail of investigations.

"She told us that she did not see their faces as it was late in the night and the house that she was raped in was also dark.

However, we shall continue looking for them and we hope to arrest them soon," added Mamadi. In a different matter, a 29-year-old man raped

a 23-year-old woman at her homestead on Saturday afternoon at Tshikinyega ward.

According to the police, the woman was resting at her home when the suspect arrived, forced open the door and raped her. Police were able to track down the suspect and arrest him.  The suspect appeared before the Mahalapye Magistrate on Monday where he was granted bail.

Mamadi expressed concern over what he said was a disturbing increase in rape cases in his jurisdiction, saying these were difficult to prevent as they happened in secluded areas.

"The cases of rape increase each week in Mahalapye and it is difficult to control them. However, we are trying to hold public education sessions and some time last month, we addressed Mowana students on issues of crime to enlighten them," he said.

He urged students to refrain from visiting areas that might put their lives at risk such as bars, but rather focus on their education.
