Bosso give Mpofu tough target

DESPITE the axe hovering over his head, under-fire Highlanders coach Mandla Mpofu remains confident that he will win the next few games to save his job as his side clashes with Herentals at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo on Sunday.

Things are not looking  good with information filtering through that the Bulawayo giants gaffer was initially given a target of 20 points in the first 10 games, which was reviewed after Highlanders lost 1-0 to Bulawayo City after attaining only four points in five games.

NewsDay Sport is reliably informed that from the Tenax game, which ended in a goalless draw, Mpofu was given another target of seven points in three games.

With a point from Tenax, a game against Herentals on Sunday at BF and the next against Caps United away, it now seems a tough task for Mpofu, who has become unpopular with many Highlanders followers.

His bosses have, however, publicly said Mpofu's target is to win the championship.

Mpofu said it is possible for Highlanders to win the championship despite the indifferent start to the 2021-2022 league programme.

"It's a must win against Herentals - a game that we need to win to keep our hopes alive, a game that we spoke with the boys about during the course of the week that it's now or never. We need to start winning games and it must start on Sunday; there is no two ways about it. We need to pull up our stockings. Time is not on our side. We want the championship. This is a big institution. We are not playing for survival, we are not playing against relegation. We really want to be number one. This Sunday we need to start catching up with the rest of the big boys," Mpofu said.

Mpofu said Highlanders must win all their home matches or just forget about the championship.

They have won once, drawn twice and lost thrice in six games, giving them a five points tally and sitting in the relegation zone.
