LEARNERS at Chigwedere Secondary School in Hwedza experienced hysteria attacks, and turned violent, forcing the school to suspend lessons.

School authorities had to seek assistance from traditional leaders and police to quell the violence after the affected students attacked other pupils.

Police in Mashonaland East province confirmed receiving the report, but referred questions to the Hwedza district schools inspector.

A number of village heads and headmen yesterday converged at the school to find solutions to the problems.

Village head Muvhimwa Govha Chigwedere said: "It is true; we have children who are not well. We are meeting today (yesterday) at the school so that we find a lasting solution to this. I will communicate the results of the meeting by traditional leaders."

Reports indicate that the attacks happened on September 28 after five Form 4 girls went into a trance and became violent. They reportedly started beating up other learners and teachers.

On October 3, a female student complained of a severe headache prompting her four friends to pray for her. She went into a trance and started beating up other students.

Her friends demanded to see all female teachers at the school, saying their problems emanated from the school administration block.

Police and traditional leaders were alerted of the problem. The girls later calmed down.
