THE opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) says it will draft a Gukurahundi policy document detailing how it proposes to bring closure to the issue.

Gukurahundi atrocities, which happened in the 1980s, claimed over 20 000 lives in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces after the government deployed the North Korean-trained Fifth Brigade to deal with "dissidents".

Some of the murdered people were dumped in disused mines, while others were buried in mass graves. To date the victims have not been compensated while the government has not attempted to bring closure to the issue.

CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere yesterday told Southern Eye that her party will craft a policy to deal with the issue.

"This is a matter that we will be tabled at our policy conference for the adoption of a comprehensive policy when we launch our new party policy document. The dates will be announced in due course," Mahere said.  "We are a new party that is currently seized with policy formulation processes. As soon as the policy document is out, we will share it with you and we will go public with it at the appropriate time."

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) said the government had been insincere in terms of solving the Gukurahundi issue.

"Zimbabwe needs proper healing. It is unfortunate that we continue to witness insincerity on the part of the government since the Gukurahundi massacres," CiCZ said yesterday.

Zanu-PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa said the issue was under the purview of the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission.
