Human Rights activists under the Restoration of Human Rights (ROHR) Zimbabwe, in the United Kingdom have petitioned President Emmerson Mnangagwa to intervene in the matter of Mary Chiwenga whom they believe is being fixed by her former husband Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.
The letter was written on April 17 by Vongai Mufara. and it states that Mnangagwa being the Head of State who appointed vice President Constantine Chiwenga must ensure that the judiciary preside over the application of the law of land and protect citizens against unlawful acts.
Mufara said , "Our appeal is necessitated by an unpreceded situation currently unfolding. Mary is gravely with lymphoedema among a slew of other ailments. Her condition is life threatening. She is now hospitalized. A report from Dr John Nyahunzvi dated 29 March 2023 indicates that amputation of her forearm is now necessary once Marry is deemed medically stable."
Mufara said Marry has not been well since 2018 and she was getting medical treatment in South Africa.
"Marry was arrested in 2019 and she has since been denied the opportunity to seek medical attention outside Zimbabwe whilst her condition continues to deteriorate," reads the petition.
ROHR questioned Mnangagwa' silence in Marry's case and pleaded for Mary to be allowed to seek medical help outside Zimbabwe where she can get help she needs despite the failure by court to show compassion towards her health.
It said this has seen her being dragged and eventually colllapsing twice outside the court.
"Mr President, we have not heard your voice concerning this issue, nor have you appeared to try to mediate and make the situation better. Your silence in face of this situation is not only worrisome but also astounding," reads the petition.
"You may not realise it but the situation is coming across as if vice President Chiwenga and your government are using Marry's situation as a weapon against citizens and especially women. This, in our opinion, is a typical case of "lawfare."
"If you are not careful, Mary's matter will rank very high amongst those that will define your legacy. Is such a glaring case of abuse of power against a mother, and , by extension , her innocent children what you want to be remembered for?"
The organisation further noted that Marry's case is the most despicable human rights violation to happen under the "New dispensation" thus the President need to understand that every single Zinbabwean's life matter.
"You are on record claiming to be a listening President but Sir, in this case you do not appear to have listened to the calls for attention to Mary's predicament. Marry Chiwenga's case is one of the most despicable human rights violations to happen under the "New Dispensation," Mufara said.
