The wife of jailed Zengeza West MP Job Sikhala was arrested on Tuesday accused of "reckless driving", her lawyer said.
Ellen Sikhala, 46, was driving on Seke Road in Harare on her way to visit her husband who has chalked up 100 days in pre-trial incarceration at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison when she was arrested.
Her lawyer Freddy Michael Masararirevu said she was detained at Harare Central Police Station for a few hours, before she was released to appear in court on Thursday.
"Police said she was driving against oncoming traffic and charged her with reckless driving. She's saying there was an accident in front of her and she was trying to navigate around that incident. She says it was inevitable (to drive on the opposite lane)," Masarirevu told ZimLive.
"She had a reasonable discussion with the officers until she disclosed she was the wife of Job Sikhala. The officers then said in that case she had to be cleared by their bosses and she was taken to Harare Central where a docket was opened."
Sikhala was arrested in June accused of inciting political violence. He has been denied bail together with Chitungwiza North colleague Godfrey Sithole and 14 others.
The activists were arrested following a funeral service for Moreblessing Ali, a Citizens Coalition for Change supporter who was abducted and later found murdered, allegedly by the young brother of the local Zanu-PF chairman in Nyatsime.
