Businesses in Harare are under a 14-day ultimatum to place bins outside their premises to enhance cleanliness within the city. Hosiah Chisango, the Town Clerk, warned that non-compliant businesses would face penalties, including potential closure.
"This requirement is effective immediately, and property owners who fail to adhere to it within the specified timeframe will not only face fines but could also have their buildings shuttered," Chisango stated.
This directive aligns with Harare Statutory Instrument 158/86 Anti-Litter By-Law, and the city authorities intend to rigorously enforce it until every building owner complies.
Harare, formerly known as Sunshine City, has unfortunately become an eyesore due to the accumulation of garbage in various public areas. The Vendors Initiative for Social and Economic Transformation expressed its support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of such a move for players in the informal economy.
