A ZUPCO conductor appeared before a Bulawayo magistrate on Thursday, facing charges of fraud for issuing passengers with blank tickets and keeping the fares for himself.
The Tredgold Magistrates' Court heard that on September 17, 2023, Tichaona Chitera, aged 40, was working as a conductor on a bus traveling to Gokwe. During the journey, he handed out blank tickets to five passengers, an act discovered by ZUPCO inspectors Desire Kabanda and Margaret Mugadza. The total value of the fraudulent tickets was US$10.
Chitera also pleaded guilty to three additional counts. On October 3, he allegedly provided a Chinhoyi-Kasimure bus passenger with a blank ticket and kept US$2 for himself. On October 5, he repeated the offense by giving blank tickets to eight other passengers and pocketing US$14. On October 8, he once again issued blank tickets, this time taking US$16 for himself.
ZUPCO was represented in court by its security officer, Atanasiyo Tapera, while the magistrate, Nomalanga Maphosa, presided over the case. Chitera was granted bail of US$40.
