Simon Makoni, a street vendor in Harare, appeared in court on Tuesday, accused of assaulting a council patrol officer. Makoni, aged 21, was granted US$50 bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on June 24.

The alleged assault took place on May 6, 2024, at the intersection of Speke and Cameron roads. Makoni, who was selling steak pies, reportedly intervened when the patrol officer, Pensila Dennis, arrested Makoni's friend for unknown reasons.

A scuffle ensued, during which Makoni allegedly struck Dennis with a metal object on his right hand and shoulder. Dennis' colleagues intervened and apprehended Makoni. Additionally, Dennis claims to have lost a Samsung A30 cellphone worth US$100 during the altercation.
