Zimbabwe govt threatens deregistration of unlicensed vehicles

The Government has issued a stern warning to owners of unregistered or unlicensed vehicles, threatening to cancel their registration if they fail to comply within two years. This announcement, published in General Notice 2028 of 2024 in the Government Gazette this week, comes amid concerns over the misuse of unregistered vehicles.
Authorities are urging vehicle owners to regularize their registration by approaching the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR) or the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA) to pay outstanding licensing arrears within 30 days of the notice.
"It is hereby notified, in terms of Section 12 (c) of the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act (Chapter 13:4), that the Registrar of Vehicles intends to cancel the registration of vehicles not licensed and exempted for a period not exceeding two years," read part of the notice.
Addressing Crime and Lawlessness
In September, police issued a warning against unregistered vehicles, highlighting their use in criminal activities such as armed robberies and as illegal pirate taxis. These vehicles are often associated with reckless driving, posing safety risks on Zimbabwean roads.
The Government is intensifying efforts to clamp down on such vehicles, which are believed to evade accountability due to their unregistered status.
Free Inspections and Assistance
Vehicle owners are encouraged to take advantage of free inspection services provided by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, CVR, and ZINARA offices nationwide. This initiative aims to ensure that all vehicles meet registration and licensing requirements while offering owners an opportunity to address any discrepancies.
Failure to comply with the directive could lead to deregistration, leaving affected vehicles permanently banned from Zimbabwe's roads.
