The Zimbabwe African National Congress (ZANC) has added its voice to calls for postponing the 2028 harmonised elections, suggesting President Emmerson Mnangagwa's term be extended to 2030 to allow for the completion of key developmental projects. The party's position aligns with the Citizens' Coalition for Change (CCC), the main opposition party, which has also supported deferring the elections.

ZANC President Timothy Mncube said the proposal to delay elections prioritises the country's developmental trajectory, emphasizing that President Mnangagwa's administration has initiated numerous transformative projects requiring continuity. He highlighted the achievements of the Second Republic, which he believes should be consolidated for the nation's benefit.

"Considering the significant progress made, extending President Mnangagwa's term to 2030 would provide the necessary time to complete ongoing projects and ensure a smoother transition. ZANC remains steadfast in its mission to serve as a vigilant and constructive opposition party," Mncube stated.

The ZANC leader clarified that the party is independent and not affiliated with Zanu-PF, stressing that opposition should focus on proposing solutions while acknowledging the government's successes. He pointed to infrastructure development, energy sector advancements, and agricultural reforms under Mnangagwa's leadership as examples of initiatives that would benefit from extended stability.

The proposal to defer the 2028 elections comes in the wake of a resolution made at Zanu-PF's 22nd National People's Conference to extend Mnangagwa's term by two years. Both ZANC and CCC are advocating for dialogue on the matter, underscoring the need to prioritise national interests over political competition.

The suggestion has sparked debate among political stakeholders, with some viewing it as a pragmatic approach to ensure progress, while others question its implications for democratic processes. The coming months are expected to see further deliberations on the proposal's feasibility and its potential impact on Zimbabwe's political landscape.
