A haulage truck driver has tragically lost his life in a head-on collision while being pursued by suspected Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) and State security agents on an anti-smuggling patrol about 60 kilometers outside Beitbridge.

Beitbridge police boss, Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, confirmed the incident but stated that he did not yet have full details. "I have dispatched officers to attend the scene. There are no details as yet, but I can confirm a fatal crash involving a haulage truck driver. We could have details later," Ncube said.

Witnesses reported that the accident occurred when an unmarked Ford Ranger, parked in the bush, ambushed and pursued the cross-border truck. As the truck driver attempted to evade the agents, he reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to land on its side and crash, fatally injuring him.

The truck driver was carrying a passenger, who survived the crash. The security agents allegedly fled the scene following the accident.

This incident is part of the ongoing heightened anti-smuggling efforts by the government, which has deployed Zimra and security agents along major roads and at ports of entry to combat smuggling activities. The crackdown has intensified in recent months as authorities seek to curb the growing smuggling problem in the region.

Authorities are expected to release more information as investigations into the incident continue.
