A Chinese miner who shot a Zimbabwean who was allegedly stealing gold dump has been denied bail by a Gwanda magistrate.

Xu Guoqing, 60, was arrested on January 22 after shooting 22-year-old Mthandazo Sibanda with a 9mm Derya pistol at Binnyup 5 Mine in Filabusi, Matabeleland South.

Sibanda was shot from the back on his left buttock and the bullet exited on his upper right thigh, hitting his right hand as it did so.

Guoqing applied for bail before Gwanda Regional Magistrate Sithembile Ndebele but the application was thrown out on Monday.

The magistrate said Sibanda remained in a critical condition at the United Bulawayo Hospitals and the attempted murder charge Guoqing was facing could yet change to murder.

Guoqing's lawyer Uukumetsi Matjaka Nare said after the hearing: "We intend to file an appeal against the denial of bail at the High Court."

Nare said Guoqing fired warning shots to scare off Sibanda but the shooting victim was determined to run off with the gold dump, prompting the Chinese man to aim for his legs.
