A 31-year-old man from Mazizini village, Mgcini Mali, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of attempting to rape a 49-year-old woman.

Mali appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza and pleaded not guilty to the charge. However, the court found him guilty based on the evidence presented.

In his ruling, Magistrate Mabeza emphasized the seriousness of the crime, stating, "Attempting to rape is also treated like rape in sentencing; hence you are sentenced to 10 years imprisonment."

The court heard that on March 7, 2023, the complainant was washing clothes at Qobintethe River in Mazizini village when Mali approached her and asked for intimacy. When she refused, Mali became violent, grabbing her by the neck and throttling her while lowering his trousers.

He then threatened to kill the woman and tried to remove her pants but was interrupted by the voices of children approaching the river. Startled, Mali fled the scene.

The victim reported the incident to the police, leading to Mali's arrest and subsequent trial.

The sentencing underscores the courts' commitment to addressing crimes of sexual violence with the gravity they deserve, serving as a stern warning to potential offenders.
