A woman was convicted to a five-year sentence after a Harare magistrates court found her guilty of trafficking a two-day old infant from South Africa to Zimbabwe.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Janet Maromo was convicted of contravening the Trafficking in Persons Act.

Circumstances surrounding the conviction were that a mother sold the infant to the offender who transported the infant across borders.

The court found special circumstances in the case including the offender's bona fide mistake about adoption laws in both countries, her lack of sophistication and the role of the biological mother in influencing her actions.
