A man from Harare's Mufakose suburb was stoned to death on Thursday night in what police are describing as a brutal altercation over a mere US$0.50.

Mike Sallimon, 33, was attacked by Bison Manyade, who reportedly became enraged after a disagreement over their share of the day's earnings from their work as kombi touts near the Lyton flyover.

According to Christina Paulos, a relative of Sallimon, Manyade was upset when he was handed US$4 instead of the US$4.50 that Sallimon had received. The argument escalated quickly, with Manyade throwing stones at Sallimon and the passenger who had paid for the touting service.

"It was such a small thing, but it led to the tragic loss of Mike’s life. He has left behind two children, and we are all devastated," Paulos said. "It’s heart-wrenching to think that his life was taken over such a small amount of money."

Police confirmed the incident, with Inspector Lovemore Chakanza stating that an investigation into the murder is underway. "We have launched a murder investigation, and we are doing everything we can to bring justice to the victim and his family," Chakanza said.

This killing marks the second violent death in Mufakose within a matter of days. Last week, a man allegedly stabbed his mother 19 times during a domestic dispute, fueling concerns about the increasing violence in the working-class suburb.

In response to these violent incidents, Mufakose residents have planned a protest on February 2 to raise awareness about the growing issue of drug abuse, which many claim is contributing to the rise in murders and other criminal activities.

The local community remains shaken, as the deaths underscore the ongoing social challenges facing the area. Just last December, a five-year-old boy was tragically killed by his mother's lover under unclear circumstances, highlighting the deepening crisis.

Authorities have urged residents to cooperate in the investigation and to remain vigilant in their efforts to curb crime in the area.
