Train collides with ZRP vehicle

A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) vehicle was severely damaged in Gweru today after it was struck by a train at a level crossing, in an incident that has raised renewed concerns over road safety awareness among motorists, including law enforcement officers.

The police vehicle, a Mahindra, was reportedly being driven by a ZRP officer who failed to observe mandatory stopping procedures at the level crossing. According to preliminary reports, the officer did not halt to check for oncoming trains before attempting to cross, resulting in a direct collision with the train.

No fatalities have been reported, but the vehicle sustained considerable damage.

This marks the second such incident involving a police vehicle this year. In January, a ZRP Ford Ranger was similarly hit by a train under nearly identical circumstances, highlighting a worrying pattern of negligence at rail intersections.

Authorities have since reiterated the importance of strict adherence to road safety regulations, particularly at rail crossings.

"We urge all drivers - including those in law enforcement - to exercise extreme caution when approaching level crossings," said a ZRP officer. "Always come to a complete stop, check carefully for approaching trains, and only proceed when it is safe. No one should ever attempt to outrun a train."

Investigations into the latest incident are ongoing. Meanwhile, road safety advocates have called for increased awareness campaigns and more rigorous enforcement of railway crossing protocols to prevent further accidents.
