A female police officer stationed at the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Chinhoyi Central has appeared in the Harare Magistrates' Court facing charges of illegal possession of ivory. Gilda Chaziva, 38, was remanded out of custody to June 14 for the continuation of her trial on allegations of contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act.

Prosecutor Chyvonne Nhira told the court that on October 31, 2022, detectives from the CID Minerals Flora and Fauna unit in Harare received information that Chaziva was in possession of ivory and actively seeking buyers. Acting on this tip-off, one detective posed as a potential buyer to lure her to the Westgate area.

Upon arrival, Chaziva revealed a white sack hidden in a nearby bush, which contained two elephant tusks wrapped in bed sheets. The detective then called in backup officers, and Chaziva was arrested at the scene. The case will continue in court on the scheduled date.
