A 34-year-old woman from Waterfalls was arrested on Monday after allegedly poisoning the food she prepared for her husband, before swallowing the same poison herself.
Abigail Mukono Rusape is accused of lacing her husband Ezra Rusape's supper with poison. Ezra, 36, discovered the suspicious taste and smell in the food before both were rushed to separate hospitals in Chitungwiza, where they are currently fighting for their lives.
According to reports, Ezra arrived home from work around 9 p.m. and began eating his supper - three spoonfuls of rice - when he noticed a paraffin-like smell emanating from the food. He stopped eating and questioned Abigail, who was resting in their bedroom, about the strange odor.
Abigail claimed the rice had smelled the same during their earlier supper and encouraged him to continue eating. Shortly after, Ezra experienced severe stomach pains and told his wife he needed to go to the hospital. A misunderstanding then erupted between the two, after which Abigail allegedly ingested poison.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrest.
"Police arrested a woman for attempted murder charges," Insp. Chakanza said. "She is admitted at a hospital, and her husband is also receiving treatment at another hospital in Chitungwiza."
Authorities are investigating the incident as both remain in critical condition.
