The trial of Harare businessmen Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu, accused of defrauding more than US$7 million from the Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme, commenced at the High Court this Tuesday.
The State opened the proceedings by presenting key evidence from a witness representing the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA). The witness testified that the documents used by the accused were forged.
Chimombe and Mpofu allegedly forged a ZIMRA tax clearance certificate and a National Social Security Authority (NSSA) compliance certificate in the name of Blackdeck Private Limited. These falsified documents were attached to a bidding submission to the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development for a tender to supply and deliver goats under the Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme.
As a result of this misrepresentation, the ministry was defrauded of over US$7 million.
The trial is set to continue this Thursday.
