The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an intensive manhunt for a hit-and-run motorist who struck and killed a 16-year-old boy along the Harare-Mutare highway, before fleeing the scene without rendering assistance.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, May 24, 2025, around 7 PM at the 119-kilometre peg near Marondera. The teenager, whose identity is being withheld until next of kin are informed, sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot.

In a statement issued this week, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the fatal accident and appealed to the public for information that could help identify and locate the driver.

"Police in Marondera are appealing for information which may assist in the investigation of a fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident which occurred at the 119-kilometre peg along Harare–Mutare Road on May 24, 2025, at around 7 PM," said Commissioner Nyathi.

"An unknown motorist hit a male juvenile (16) and did not stop after the accident. The victim sustained head injuries and died on the spot," he said.

The police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the accident or who has any relevant information - including vehicle descriptions, registration numbers, or sightings near the scene - to immediately report to the nearest police station.

The incident has sparked concern among road safety advocates and residents in the area, who have called for increased patrols and enforcement on the busy highway, particularly during the evening hours.

As the investigation continues, the ZRP reiterated its warning to motorists to exercise caution on the roads and reminded the public that fleeing the scene of an accident is a serious criminal offence punishable under Zimbabwean law.
