41-year-old Charles Chamanga of Odzi was arraigned before court on charges of hacking, contravening Section 163 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, as read with Section 35(2) of the Data Protection Act.
Chamanga pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecution outlined that on 23 February 2025, at shop number 3198, Odzi Location, Mutare, Chamanga unlawfully accessed his wife Elizabeth Limambo's phone without her consent.
The incident unfolded when Limambo received suspicious WhatsApp messages that appeared to be sent by her but without her knowledge. Upon investigation, she found unknown devices linked to her WhatsApp account, which she promptly removed.
The following day, Limambo confronted her husband, who admitted to hacking her phone to monitor information related to her divorce court cases. Limambo discovered that Chamanga had been communicating with Maclean Murauro via WhatsApp on her phone and subsequently reported the matter to the police.
Chamanga is expected back in court for trial on 2 June 2025.
