Matabeleland South police have launched an urgent manhunt for an unidentified suspect believed to have impregnated a 13-year-old girl who gave birth mid-air while being airlifted from Maphisa Hospital to United Bulawayo Hospitals following birth complications.

The dramatic incident occurred earlier this month when the minor was evacuated by the Helidrive National Air Rescue Service due to medical complications. Just seven minutes after takeoff, the young mother went into labour during the flight.

Dr. Marshall Kahari, the attending doctor on board, described the delivery as a delicate and precise procedure carried out under challenging conditions while en route to Bulawayo.

Inspector Chiratidzo Dube, Matabeleland South police provincial spokesperson, confirmed that investigations are underway with the primary objective of identifying, locating, and apprehending the suspect responsible for impregnating the minor.

"As police Matabeleland South, we are thoroughly investigating the matter. This involves identifying witnesses and interviewing them to gather evidence. It also involves apprehending the suspect whilst ensuring the victim receives support and the justice they deserve," Insp. Dube said.

Authorities have appealed to the public to provide any information that may assist the investigation. Meanwhile, the minor continues to receive medical care and support as the police work swiftly to bring the perpetrator to justice.
