South Africa releases names of 43 Zimbabweans who died

Authorities in South Africa have released the names of 43 Zimbabweans who perished in a devastating bus accident near Musina, Limpopo, on Sunday evening. The tragedy has left families across Zimbabwe and South Africa in mourning as efforts continue to identify victims and assist survivors.

According to officials, the long-distance coach was travelling from Gqeberha to Harare when it lost control on the N1 highway near Ingwe Lodge, outside Makhado. The bus reportedly rolled down an embankment before landing on its roof, killing 42 people on the spot and injuring dozens of others. One more victim later succumbed to injuries, bringing the death toll to 43.

Among the deceased were seven children, highlighting the scale of the loss. Limpopo transport authorities described the crash as one of the worst transport disasters to strike the province in recent months.

Emergency services and rescue teams worked through the night to recover bodies and assist the injured, who were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have urged families with relatives who were travelling on the bus to contact local police or visit designated centres to help with identification.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, with preliminary reports suggesting that the driver may have lost control due to high speed or mechanical failure.

Zimbabwe's Consulate in Johannesburg has been working with South African authorities to assist in identifying victims and coordinating the repatriation of bodies.
