Influencer arrested over Kuwadzana tragedy donations

Social media influencer Josephine Mutongi has been arrested in connection with the Kuwadzana Extension tragedy, where three children were found dead in the trunk of a car, police confirmed on Tuesday.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said investigations were underway following Mutongi's alleged misconduct in the aftermath of the heartbreaking incident.

Mutongi sparked public outrage after she was accused of exploiting the tragedy for social media attention. During the children's funeral, she allegedly collected cash donations from mourners without the consent of the bereaved families.

She later posted a video on social media, claiming she had handed over the money she received — a move that further inflamed criticism, with many accusing her of insensitivity and opportunism.

Police say the investigation will determine whether Mutongi's actions amounted to fraud or misrepresentation.

The Kuwadzana Extension case has gripped the nation with grief and anger, as authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the three minors and the events that followed.
