A four-year-old boy tragically died on Friday after being struck on the head by a tombstone in a bizarre accident in Mbare, Harare.
The child, who had accompanied his father to purchase a tombstone, reportedly tripped and attempted to steady himself by holding onto one of the tombstones on display. The tombstone fell, hitting him on the head.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, noting that the boy, aged four years and seven months, was rushed to a Harare hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
"The victim died upon admission at a hospital in Harare," the police statement said, describing the incident as a "sad" accident. Authorities are yet to comment further on safety measures at the site.
