A 39-year-old man from Hwedza has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of repeatedly raping his 14-year-old biological daughter over a two-year period.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, pleaded guilty to the charges before Marondera magistrate Mr Ignatious Mhene.

In mitigation, he expressed remorse but claimed "evil spirits" had driven him to commit the heinous acts.

The magistrate described the man’s actions as abhorrent and deserving severe punishment.

Prosecutor Ms Barbara Mabika told the court that the abuse began in September 2023 after the complainant, now a Form 2 learner, returned from South Africa to continue her education.

At the time, she was in Grade 6.

The court heard that the victim’s father would follow her into her grandmother’s bedroom as she changed out of her school uniform.

He would then fondle her breasts, caress her buttocks and genitals and repeatedly assault her without her consent.

The girl initially did not report the incidents as her father had threatened her with death.

The sexual abuse escalated in October 2023 when the accused forcibly pulled the complainant into her grandmother’s house, removed her underwear and raped her.

After the assault, he ordered her to act normally and play with her friends as if nothing had happened.

The assaults continued until February 2024 when the accused left for South Africa.

However, upon his return in May 2025, the abuse resumed and persisted until September 2025.

The case came to light on October 21, 2025 after the complainant’s mother, growing suspicious of her daughter’s interactions with a boy named Morelife, set up a recording device on her cellphone.

In the recorded conversations, the complainant denied being intimate with her boyfriend but revealed she had been sexually abused by her father from September 2023 to September 2025.

Acting on a tip-off, Constable Senzere interviewed the complainant, who detailed the repeated abuse.

The victim’s mother later corroborated her daughter’s account, confirming the victim had confided in her about the prolonged abuse.
