Two children were allegedly abducted in Chinhoyi over the weekend while their mother attended an apostolic faith gathering that was expected to feature controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo.

The siblings, identified as Munashe (11) and Tawanda (13), were reportedly taken from their home in the early hours of the morning by three unidentified men. The children later told authorities that the men woke them up and claimed they were taking them to their mother.

Police in Mashonaland West Province are yet to issue an official statement, but investigations are underway.

Johanne Masowe weChishanu sect leader Madzibaba Takudzwa, who was presiding over the service, confirmed that he noticed the children missing shortly after morning worship began. He subsequently filed a report at Chinhoyi Central Police Station.

Police later found the children unharmed but visibly shaken, tied to a tree near Lions Den, about 25 kilometres from Chinhoyi.

Their mother, Yolanda Manyengavana, said the ordeal left the family deeply traumatised.

"We went for prayers and left the children asleep. When we returned, they were gone," she said.

The motive behind the abduction and the identities of the suspects remain unclear. Chivayo, who was expected to attend the gathering, did not turn up.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant as investigations into the disturbing incident continue.
