Five people narrowly escaped death on Monday morning after two vehicles collided head-on along the Harare–Bulawayo Highway, about 210 kilometres from Harare.

The horrific crash, which occurred around 8am near Kwekwe, left both cars extensively damaged, with debris strewn across the highway as passing motorists rushed to assist the injured.

Midlands Provincial Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the accident, attributing it to human error.

"It is alleged that Collen Mugodi (48) of Mbizo, Kwekwe, was driving a Honda Freed with seven passengers on board towards Harare," said Insp Mahoko.
"On approaching the 210-kilometre peg, Mugodi attempted to overtake another vehicle. During the process, he collided head-on with a Honda Fit that was travelling in the opposite direction."

The Honda Fit was being driven by Knowledge Luposa (25) of Amaveni, Kwekwe, who had five passengers with him.

According to police, Luposa and four of his passengers sustained injuries ranging from cuts to suspected fractures and were rushed to Kwekwe District Hospital for treatment.

Mugodi and his passengers reportedly suffered minor injuries and managed to walk away from the wreckage.

Police have since urged motorists to exercise extreme caution and patience on the roads, particularly when overtaking, to prevent such potentially fatal accidents.
