A MUTASA man, who struck his wife with an axe accusing her of infidelity, was last week convicted for culpable homicide and sentenced to seven years in prison for causing her death.
David Taguma Mutero had denied responsibility for his wife Jessica Mandiwanza's death when he appeared before the Mutare High Court circuit presided by Justice Charles Hungwe.
The court heard that the couple who were on separation had a heated verbal exchange on November 8 last year as Mandiwanza was walking back home after charging her cellphone at the nearby homestead.
State counsel Jane-Rose Matsikidze said Mutero suspected her of having an extra-marital affair.
In the ensuing melee, Mutero attacked Mandiwanza's head several times using an axe handle and she yelled for help from fellow villagers until she fell unconscious.
The deceased's mother Sireza Savireyi later rushed to the scene and found her bleeding profusely from the head and took her to Mutare Provincial Hospital for treatment.
However, she succumbed to the assault injuries on admission to the hospital.
The matter was then reported to police, leading to Mutero's arrest.
