AN 18-year-old woman from Nyazura is ruing the day she dumped her boyfriend and settled for another after the former went berserk and set her house on fire before stealing her new-born baby.

Evelyn Muzuruki is lucky to be alive after Hlanganani Sithole (28) burnt the kitchen hut he thought she was sleeping in.

However, one unawares Enock Muzuruki was sleeping in the hut that Sithole put on fire. When Muzuruki stormed out of the hut running for dear life, Sithole hit him with an iron bar which he also turned on Evelyn.

After the vicious attack, he stole the newly born baby and vanished from the scene. Hlanganani was later arrested and was set to appear in court facing attempted murder and malicious damage to property charges. Manicaland provincial police spokesman, Inspector Enock Chishiri confirmed the incident saying investigations were in progress.

Sometime in July 2014, Hlanganani was in love with Evelyn. They later broke up and Evelyn fell in love with another man and got pregnant. In January 2015 when Hlanganani learnt about her pregnancy, he claimed ownership and vowed to take the baby from her once she gives birth.

"On June 4, she gave birth to a baby girl. Hlanganani visited Evelyn insisting that the baby was his. On June 18 around midnight he pounced and set the kitchen hut on fire thinking Evelyn was sleeping inside. Enock Muzuruki who had slept in that house that night managed to escape with minor injuries. Hlanganani who was waiting outside the burning house, hit Enock twice with an iron bar. He went to another thatched hut and hit Evelyn," said Insp Chishiri.
