The government is set to extend the food relief programme to urban areas as it fulfills its promise that no Zimbabwean should die of hunger.

Vulnerable groups which include the disabled, the elderly, the chronically ill and orphans in urban areas are set to benefit from the government programme following the realisation that people living in urban areas have also been affected by the food deficits.

Addressing Chinhoyi residents, the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Prisca Mupfumira reaffirmed government's commitment in the fight against starvation in both urban and rural communities through effective grain distribution arrangements.

In February, President Robert Mugabe declared the 2015-2016 agricultural season a disaster, prompting government to intervene and come up with measures to mitigate the effects of the El-Nino induced drought.
