A blind Kwekwe man allegedly struck and killed an eight-month-old baby who was strapped to her mother's back with his walking aid, a metal cane, following a dispute over $1 with a commuter omnibus conductor in Gweru, the Chronicle reported.
Christopher Mafunganye, 32, of Extension 15/2 Mbizo, Kwekwe, appeared before Magistrate Judith Taruvinga facing a murder charge.
Prosecutor Daniel Tapfuma told the court that on January 1, this year at around 3.30PM and at Ascot taxi rank in Gweru, Mafunganye had a misunderstanding with commuter omnibus conductor Marvellous Mukacha.
"Mafunganye had an argument with Mukacha over the payment of the taxi fare. While they were arguing, Mafunganye in a fit of rage threw his metal walking cane with the intention of hitting the conductor but instead it struck a baby girl who was strapped to her mother's back," said Tapfuma.
He said the baby sustained a swollen head and died on her way to hospital.
