In a sad development at one of Zimbabwe's largest gold mines, Shamva Mine, one underground employee is feared dead in what is described as gross neglect of occupational health and safety standards at the company.
The employee (name with held), was trapped in a toxic gaseous shaft at underground's 17 level.
Two unequipped workmates (names with held) who made rescue attempt were also affected by gasses at the initial stage their mission. The two have been rushed to the Avenue clinic and are said to be in critical conditions. The tragic incident happened at around 14:00hrs with a Rescue or rather a Retrieval team arriving well after two hours. Sources say team was hired from Bindura's Trojan Mine, some 35 km away.
The Mine management and the workers committee was seen milling around the company's clinic at around 18:00hrs when the seemingly dead employee was retrieved.
For long, issues of Health and Safety have been thorny and shrouded in controversy at Shamva Mine. Given this fatality, it remains to be seen how the workers will react to a company that boasts of holding an ISO certificate (14:001).
