A car dealer from Avondale, Hillary Muchipisi (35), appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa on Thursday, facing charges of theft of a motor vehicle. He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

The case stems from an incident in July 2025 involving complainant Makomborero Chinyanganya, who had borrowed US$2,500 from Guess Evolution Car Sale director Felix Chanetsa and left his Mercedes Benz A180 as collateral.

In August, Muchipisi allegedly approached Chanetsa, claiming he had been authorised by Chinyanganya to repay the loan and collect the vehicle. Believing the representation to be genuine, Chanetsa released the car to Muchipisi after receiving the US$2,500.

When Chinyanganya returned in October to reclaim his vehicle, he discovered that Muchipisi had already taken it. Police investigations led to Muchipisi's arrest at his residence on August 21, 2025. During questioning, he allegedly admitted to selling the car to an individual identified as Talent Munyanyi. The vehicle has not yet been recovered.

The matter remains under investigation.
