ZAMBIA Minister of Finance Alexander Chikwanda has appealed to African countries not to join Western States in isolating Zimbabwe.

Mr Chikwanda, who was representing Zambian president Sata at the summit, told the meeting that instead of joining in the isolation of Zimbabwe, African countries should encourage land reforms in that country.

This is contained in a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday by first secretary for press at the Zambian High Commission in South Africa, Patson Chilemba.

Mr Chikwanda said Zimbabwe should be embraced because it is a member of the international community.

"All those sanctions against Zimbabwe, what are they achieving? Those (land) reforms will never be reversed," Mr Chikwanda said.

The meeting was attended by several heads of state including Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.
