2014 top 100 A' Level schools named

BULAWAYO'S Mpopoma High School, Tongwe High in Matabeleland South, Tshabanda Secondary in Matabeleland North, Shungu High in the Midlands and St Anthony's High in Masvingo are the best schools to send your child for A' Level in southern Zimbabwe, new figures show.
St Faith's High in Rusape, Manicaland, is the best school in the country after recording a 100 percent pass rate with 107 candidates, a new report by the Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) says.
The Zimsec report is based on the results of the November 2014 A- Level examinations, which were released last week.
Matabeleland South had four schools in the top 100 nationally, Matabeleland North and Bulawayo one each, the Midlands nine and Masvingo more than 10.
Beitbridge schools Tongwe High and Zezani High both had a 100 percent pass rate, earning a ranking of 16th and 18th respectively in the coveted Top 100 A' Level Schools list.
Manama High School in Gwanda (95.45) and Empandeni High School in Plumtree (93.75) also made the top 100, slotting in as 78th and 98th.
Other top performers from the province were the Salvation Army-run Usher High in Plumtree district which is ranked 121 and registered a 91.8 percent pass rate with Mzingwane High School in Esigodini - showing signs of recapturing its glory years - following closely at 90.24 percent for a national ranking of 150.
Also making the top 10 in Matabeleland South were Brethren-In-Christ Church run Mtshabezi, Thekwani Mission, Phakamani Secondary and Filabusi High.
The Zimsec statistics do not have Bulawayo as a stand-alone province, with its results reflected under Matabeleland North. But despite the joining of the two provinces, they managed just two in the top 100.
In Matabeleland North, that honour went to Tshabanda Secondary School in Binga, which had a 95.65 percent pass rate from its 23 candidates. The school came 75th nationally.
Mpopoma High School, with a hefty 130 candidates, continued to fly the Bulawayo flag with a 96.15 percent pass rate which was good enough for 63rd nationally.
Nkulumane High School was rated the second best school in Matabeleland North and Bulawayo after recording a 92.86 percent pass rate. It is ranked 107 nationally.
Other top performers were the Seventh Day Adventist-run Maranatha Adventist High in Nketa (92 percent), followed by Lusulu Secondary in Binga which also recorded a 92 percent pass rate. The Anglican-run St Columbus High followed closely with 91.67 percent success.
Founders High, Pumula High, Magwegwe Secondary and St Bernard's High complete the top 10 in the combined provinces.
In the Midlands, the Roman Catholic-run Shungu High School and the Seventh Day Adventist-run Anderson both recorded a 100 percent pass rate. In the Top 100 table, Shungu slotted in seventh while Anderson is ranked 19th nationally.
Regina Mundi Girls High (97.53 percent) was number three in the province followed Chegato High School in Mberengwa (97.18). Hama Secondary (96.83), Cheziya-Gokwe High (95.77), Mnene Secondary in Mberengwa (95.45), Dadaya High in Zvishavane (95), Kana (93.94) and Pakame Secondary (92.06) schools in Shurugwi completed the top 10 in the province.
In Masvingo, St Anthony's High School, another Catholic-run institution, was rated the best. The school, which came third nationally, had all of its candidates passing.
Unique to Masvingo though, six other schools also recorded a 100 percent pass rate - Hebron High, Zaka High, Chinorumba Secondary, Chatikobo High, Tugwane Secondary and Mutimwi High.
The number of candidates who sat for the examination separated the schools, with St Anthony's carrying 72 students through to the next level of their education.
Gutu, Gokomere and Chibi completed the top 10 in the province.
All the schools completing the Top 100 table attained a pass rate above 90 percent. The majority were church-run schools. Zimsec Director Esau Nhandara said most candidates performed well last year.
"Generally, the performance of November 2014 candidates was commendable in most subjects. Reasons for this performance may vary from subject to subject and may only be substantiated by empirical research to confirm the trend in the pass rates," he said.
According to the report, 30,614 candidates sat for the examinations of whom 25,291 obtained a Grade E or better in two or more subjects.
"This gives a percentage pass rate of 82,61 for school candidates. We had 7,324 private candidates and 4,217 obtained at least Grade E or better in two or more subjects. This translates to a percentage pass rate of 57,58 percent ," reads the report.
