INFORMATION and Broadcasting Services secretary Ndavaningi 'Nick' Mangwana has insinuated that controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo who implicated President Emmerson Mnangagwa in his extensive and secretive dealings is now flying too close to the sun.
Mangwana said this on X (formerly twitter)
Said Mangwana, "Icarus was warned by his father not to fly too close to the sun, as the wax that his wings were made from would melt. But fueled by the adrenaline rush of flying, Icarus failed to rein in his excitement and felt he was the man of the moment. He did not heed the warnings, Icarus was so intoxicated by the experience of flying and never thought he could tumble from this loft height, so he flew higher and higher getting closer and closer to the sun. The closer he came to the sun, the more the wax in his wings melted. He tumbled into the sea and drowned."
Icarus, in Greek mythology, son of the inventor Daedalus who perished by flying too near the Sun with waxen wings.
In Greek mythology, Daedalus, was the architect of the labyrinth of Crete. After Theseus, king of Athens and enemy of Minos, escaped from the labyrinth, King Minos suspected that Icarus and Daedalus had revealed the labyrinth's secrets and imprisoned them - either in a large tower overlooking the ocean or the labyrinth itself, depending upon the account. Icarus and Daedalus escaped using wings Daedalus constructed from feathers, threads from blankets, clothes, and beeswax. Daedalus warned Icarus first of complacency and then of hubris, instructing him to fly neither too low nor too high, lest the sea's dampness clog his wings or the sun's heat melt them. Icarus ignored Daedalus's instructions not to fly too close to the sun, causing the beeswax in his wings to melt. Icarus fell from the sky, plunged into the sea, and drowned. The myth gave rise to the idiom, "fly too close to the sun."
A leaked voice note by controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo implicates President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Chivayo's extensive and secretive dealings, which include millions paid for last year's voting materials. In the audio, Chivayo boasts about having significant influence in Zimbabwe, citing his close relationship with Mnangagwa, who he claims promised substantial financial rewards to his associates if they remained patient and stopped opposing his efforts to consolidate power.
Chivayo mentions businessmen Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe, alleging he deceived them in the voting material deal. The leaked note reveals Chivayo's involvement in unspecified lucrative deals with Zimbabwe's immigration department and the police. He describes himself as a key member of Mnangagwa's inner circle and urges his colleagues to exploit this connection for financial gain, despite past conflicts with Mnangagwa.
Chivayo, who had previously fallen out with Mnangagwa and his faction, has been trying to regain favor by supporting the ruling Zanu PF party and its prominent supporters. He claims to be significantly wealthier than before the elections and calls for patience from his associates as they work towards closer ties with the President.
Chivayo's wealth sources remain unclear, with his company, Intratek Zimbabwe, known only for failing to deliver on a solar power project.
