Gwanda is planning to take advantage of Gwanda State University's (GSU) projected 12 000 student population and make business out of it, the mayor Thulani Moyo has said.

Moyo told Two Nations in an interview that he is anxious to see GSU moving to its 89-hectare site in the town and will soon be engaging the tertiary institute to start building its administrative offices.

Gwanda allocated GSU 89 hectares within its locality. GSU is currently operating from its campus in Filabusi.

He said that Gwanda has a total population of 30 000 residents and the coming of GSU into town will see this jump by 40% to 42 000 and the downstream business benefits are significant.

The other higher institution of learning in Gwanda is Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic which has between 4 000 and 6 000 students.

The University currently has offices at the local authority premises.

"As a provincial capital, we have Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic and we are looking forward to have an additional tertiary institution, Gwanda State University. With that in mind, it is in our focus that town will have population growth due to the operations of the colleges. Our verge is to come up with big spaces to create residential stands and flats for students' accommodation," he said.
