On Thursday, Bulawayo experienced two tragic suicides, underscoring the critical issue of mental health struggles.
In the first incident, Christopher Androliakos, a 58-year-old prominent cattle breeder and meat processor, was found hanging in his Famona home. His domestic worker discovered his body after noticing locked doors and unanswered calls. Androliakos' wife was away in Harare at the time.
In the second incident, Cecil Elisha, a 27-year-old man scheduled for a medical check-up in Johannesburg, was found hanging in the restroom at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport. An airport security officer discovered his body after Elisha failed to return for his flight.
Inspector Abednico Ncube from the Bulawayo Province police urged the public to seek counseling during tough times, emphasizing the World Health Organization's classification of suicide as a significant public health concern. In 2019, Zimbabwe's suicide rate was among the highest globally, at 23.6 per 100,000 people.
