Mphoko's body expected this week from India

The body of former Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko, who passed away in India last Friday at the age of 84, is being repatriated this week, with arrangements coordinated by Zimbabwean and Indian authorities.

Mphoko, a liberation war veteran and former diplomat, has been declared a national hero in recognition of his extensive contributions to Zimbabwe's liberation and post-Independence development.
Repatriation and Burial Preparations

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Professor Amon Murwira, confirmed that efforts to bring Mphoko's remains home were progressing smoothly.

"We are working closely with Indian authorities to ensure the remains are respectfully repatriated back home," said Prof Murwira.

Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Permanent Secretary Ambassador Raphael Faranisi added that internal preparations for the burial were also underway, with further details to be announced in due course.
President Mnangagwa Pays Tribute

President Emmerson Mnangagwa described Mphoko as a dedicated liberation fighter and an unwavering patriot who contributed immensely to Zimbabwe's development.

"His appointment as Vice President in 2014 was both deserved and consistent with his long service to his people, who today grieve and mourn his untimely departure," said the President.
Tributes Pour In

Vice President Kembo Mohadi expressed shock and sadness over Mphoko's passing, describing him as a "true patriot and tireless worker" for Zimbabwe.

"We worked together during the liberation struggle and after. His commitment to the party's success, particularly during the 2023 harmonized elections, was unmatched," said VP Mohadi.

Zimbabwe's Ambassador to Russia, Brigadier-General (Retired) Ambrose Mutinhiri, called Mphoko's death a "monumental loss," highlighting his patriotism and dedication since the early 1960s.

Zanu-PF Secretary-General Dr. Obert Mpofu reflected on Mphoko's leadership and his devout Seventh-Day Adventist faith, noting his unique way of expressing love for Zimbabwe through photography.

Former Minister Tabetha Kanengoni-Malinga described Mphoko as a compassionate and principled leader who championed peace, reconciliation, and equitable development.
A Life of Service

Born on June 11, 1940, in Bubi District, Mphoko played a critical role in Zimbabwe's liberation movement. His activism began in the 1960s, leading to military training in the Soviet Union and command positions in ZAPU's armed wing.

Mphoko's notable milestones include participating in the Wankie Campaign, attending the Lancaster House peace talks, and serving as a special envoy for the late Dr. Joshua Nkomo.

Post-Independence, he held several diplomatic and government roles, including Ambassador to Botswana, Russia, and South Africa, before being appointed Vice President in 2014.

Mphoko is survived by his wife, Laurinda, their three children—Sikhumbuzo, Siduduzo, and Siqokoqela—and three grandchildren.
Legacy of Patriotism

Mphoko's contributions to Zimbabwe's liberation, governance, and development will remain a cornerstone of his legacy. As preparations for his burial continue, the nation honors a life dedicated to freedom, unity, and progress.
