A man who escaped from Chikurubi Prison Farm almost three years ago has been re-arrested, police confirmed Friday, ending a long-running manhunt for a suspect linked to multiple crimes.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police said 38-year-old Hillary Chiduwo was apprehended on May 1 at his mother's home in Chipipiro Village, Wedza, following a tip-off from members of the public.
Chiduwo had been on the run since May 24, 2022, when he broke out of custody while serving time at the maximum-security Chikurubi Prison Farm. Authorities said he was also wanted in connection with three separate cases of unlawful entry and theft committed while he was on the run.
"Police acted on information received and arrested the suspect without incident," said national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi. "We appreciate the support of the public in bringing this fugitive to justice."
The re-arrest of Chiduwo brings to light ongoing concerns about security lapses at correctional facilities and the risks posed by escaped inmates who may reoffend while evading capture.
Chiduwo is expected to face additional charges related to his escape and the alleged crimes committed during his time as a fugitive.
