A tragic accident has plunged a Kensington family into mourning after a 55-year-old father accidentally ran over and killed his 2-year-old daughter while reversing his car out of the yard.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on the morning of 20 June 2025, at approximately 8:43AM in Hendricourt, Kensington, just outside Bulawayo. The man was reversing his Toyota Hilux Double Cab when the front left side of the vehicle struck the toddler, before the front wheel rolled over her.
Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, confirmed the incident, stating that the child suffered severe head injuries and died instantly at the scene.
"The accident occurred when the driver failed to keep a proper lookout while reversing out of the yard," said Inspector Msebele.
The devastating loss has sparked a wave of grief in the quiet suburban community, with neighbours expressing deep sorrow over the accident. Many described the family as close-knit and loving, and the child's death has sent shockwaves through the area.
Police have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when operating vehicles around residential spaces, particularly where young children are present.
"We remind all drivers to be vigilant and conduct thorough checks around their vehicles before moving, especially in homes where children may be playing," added Inspector Msebele.
No charges had been confirmed at the time of publication, as investigations into the incident continue.
