Presidential Spokesperson and Deputy Chief Secretary George Charamba has dismissed reports that the government had banned tinted windows on private vehicles, describing the claims as false and unauthorised.

The announcement had earlier been made by Permanent Secretary for Presidential Affairs and Devolution, Tafadzwa Muguti, who stated that the State was planning to prohibit the use of tinted windows on private cars as part of efforts to curb crime and drug abuse.

Taking to social media, Charamba clarified the situation, stating, “There is no basis in fact or law to the accompanying announcement attributed to Secretary Muguti. Kindly ignore this mis-communication from an unauthorised office and officer.”

The clarification follows concerns from motorists who feared potential roadblocks, forced removals of tinted glass, and the impounding of vehicles. Some legal experts had also questioned the legality of Muguti's earlier statement.

With Charamba's intervention, the government's official position remains unchanged, and no ban on tinted windows has been instituted.
