Former Zanu-PF legislator for Kambuzuma, Tinashe Maduza, has been arraigned before Harare magistrate Apollonia Marutya on allegations of defrauding a home-seeker of US$75,000 in a bogus residential stand deal.

Maduza was granted US$300 bail and ordered not to interfere with State witnesses. He is expected to return to court on December 5 for routine remand.

According to the State, sometime in December last year, the complainant approached Maduza in search of a residential stand in or around Harare.

Maduza, working in connivance with accomplices who are already on remand, allegedly offered the complainant a stand in Quinnington Township, Harare, for US$75,000. The documents they presented, purportedly from the City of Harare, were later discovered to be fraudulent.

The complainant reportedly paid the full amount for the stand. However, when they later approached the City of Harare for plan approval, officials revealed that the land in question was privately owned and not council property.

When confronted, Maduza and his accomplices allegedly became evasive, prompting the complainant to lodge a police report. Investigations led to Maduza's arrest.

The case adds to growing concerns over fraudulent land sales in Harare, with authorities warning home-seekers to verify ownership details before making payments.
