A police officer in Gweru was knocked down by a motorist after he attempted to drive past a stationary car. The man, Phanuel Rufaro Maphosa, (63) of 2110 Mkoba 14 was dragged to court and pleaded not guilty before Gweru Magistrate Mildred Matuvi.

Prosecutor Ernest Muzembe told the court that on 24 May in 2014, Maphosa was driving a Toyota Camry with registration numbers ABU-4059 along Hamutyinei Road heading to town.

On approaching the Mkoba teacher's college, there were police officers who were manning a road block.

It is understood that Maphosa tried to drive past a stationary vehicle which was being checked by the police and in the process hit Constable Dominic Moyo who was on the other lane with the right view mirror.

Moyo fell headlong on the windscreen of the car thereby sustaining serious head injuries. The trial continues.
