THE Bulawayo Top 10 Chart on ZiFM's Zi Saturday Zone: Your link to the City of Kings and Queens hosted by DJ Gibson Ncube which debuted over the weekend with a bang as it appears to have taken the region and the nation by storm.
Ncube, who introduced the chart last Saturday, has been hailed by local music lovers and artistes for the work he is doing in uplifting Bulawayo music so that it gets national recognition.
Speaking to Southern Eye Lifestyle in an interview, the presenter said this would be a great platform for local musicians to excel and get their names known.
"A lot has been said about Bulawayo musicians not getting airplay on national radio stations and in the 12 weeks I've been on ZiFM, I've profiled more than 30 artistes and played more than 70 songs from Bulawayo, which is a lot -- it's more than any radio presenter has done on any national radio station at any level," Ncube said.
"If I put into consideration that my show is only once a week, I've probably played way more music from our region than any other radio station has played in the same amount of time I've been at ZiFM."
The show starts at 6:00pm playing snippets of local songs and people being given the opportunity to start voting on the ZiFM WhatsApp line.
He went on to introduce the Bulawayo Top 10 Chart to the rest of the country at 7:30pm by playing 12 local songs in full so as to set up the chart.
"All the songs were starting off at number 10 and they were going to work their way up to the number one spot through people's votes," he said.
Fans and artistes took to Facebook on a group titled Bulawayo Music Association in support of Ncube's initiative.
When asked about the type of songs that qualify to get on the chart, the presenter said: "My show is an urban and upbeat show that aims to put people into the weekend mode and as much as I would love to keep it that way. I have no control of the songs that people will vote for.
That's why it's a chart, it's for popular music and for people to vote for their favourite song, voting will be via WhatsApp and Facebook platform"
