Monaco – After rumours of an alleged third illegitimate child for Prince Albert II started circulating, Princess Charlene of Monaco tried to escape the marriage not once but three times, reports the Herald Sun.

According to Herald Sun, South African-born Charlene even took refuge at the South African embassy in France, before she was eventually persuaded to stay in Monaco and continue with the wedding as planned.

The first escape attempt reportedly took place in May when then-Wittstock got cold feet during a trip to Paris where she was scheduled to fit her Armani wedding dress.

She again attempted to leave shortly after the Monaco Grand Prix.

Passport confiscated

And then only last week reports started surfacing that her passport had been confiscated while she had been on her way to the airport in Nice, France.

Behind the alleged escape attempts lurk dark rumours that Albert, 53, had fathered one or possibly more illegitimate children during his relationship with Charlene.

Prince Albert II already has two illegitimate children from relationships he had before he met Charlene.

Albert and Charlene have been together for five years, so any claims of children under five suggest cheating on Albert's side.

Two more illegitimate children

Le Journal du Dimanche reported that policy advisers have mentioned "two illegitimate children – one already born, the other to come".
Palace officials have privately admitted that Prince Albert will undergo a paternity test.

Under Monaco law, none of Prince Albert's illegitimate children have a claim to the throne.
